Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Any business still running it is now operating with unpatched vulnerabilities and no safety net.
What End of Support Actually Means
When Microsoft ends support for an operating system, it stops releasing security patches. That sounds straightforward, but the implications are significant. Every new vulnerability discovered in Windows 10 from that date onwards goes unpatched. Permanently.
In 2025 alone, 638 security vulnerabilities were recorded in Windows 10. Since EOL on 14 October 2025, a further 388 CVEs have already been identified in 2026, carrying an average severity score of 7.2 out of 10. Not one of those will receive a patch for organisations outside Microsoft’s paid Extended Security Updates programme. The attack surface does not plateau after end of support. It keeps growing.
The scale of exposure is significant. Roughly 40 percent of Windows users were still running Windows 10 when support ended. That represents millions of devices worldwide, including a large proportion of UK SMEs that have yet to complete their migration.
Why Attackers Love End-of-Life Systems
Cybercriminals actively monitor for operating systems that have reached end of support. Once Microsoft stops patching Windows 10, attackers can study newly discovered vulnerabilities and deploy exploits knowing the target cannot be fixed.
This is not a theoretical risk. When Windows XP reached end of support in 2014, attacks against it increased sharply in the months that followed. The WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017 disproportionately affected organisations still running unsupported Windows systems.
End-of-life systems become permanent targets because the attack surface never shrinks. Every month that passes, the list of known, exploitable vulnerabilities grows longer.
The Business Impact Goes Beyond Security
Running an unsupported operating system does not just expose you to cyber threats. It can also affect:
Cyber insurance eligibility: many insurers now ask specifically whether systems run supported software. Running Windows 10 post-EOL could invalidate your cover or increase premiums.
Regulatory compliance: if your business handles personal data under UK GDPR, running unpatched systems that could expose that data is a compliance risk.
Cyber Essentials certification: the scheme requires that software be supported and up to date. Windows 10 post-EOL fails this requirement.
Client and supplier trust: procurement processes and due diligence questionnaires increasingly ask about software currency. Running unsupported software can become a barrier to winning business.
What About Extended Security Updates?
Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows 10, which provide continued security patches for an additional period after the end-of-support date. However, ESUs are not a long-term solution. They are designed to give organisations more time to migrate, not to replace the upgrade.
ESUs come at a cost, they escalate in price each year, and they do not bring the modern security architecture built into Windows 11. They buy time. They do not solve the underlying problem.
What Your Business Should Do Now
If your organisation is still running Windows 10 devices, the priority should be a structured transition to Windows 11. Many modern devices are already compatible. The upgrade path is well-established and, with the right support, it need not be disruptive.
