If you are still deciding between Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Business Premium, the decision recently got easier. From July 2026, Standard's price is going up while Premium's is not, closing the one gap that used to make Standard the safer choice on paper.
What Each Plan Actually Gives You
Business Standard and Business Premium share the same productivity core: full desktop and web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, business-class email through Exchange, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive. If you compare the two plans purely on the apps your staff use every day, they look almost identical.
The difference sits entirely on the security and device management side, and it is a bigger difference than most business owners realise until something goes wrong.
The Security Features Business Premium Adds
Microsoft Defender for Business
This is proper endpoint protection, not the basic antivirus most people picture. It actively hunts for and blocks ransomware, malware and phishing attempts across every managed device, includes attack surface reduction rules that close off common attack routes before they are used, and gives whoever manages your IT visibility into threats as they happen rather than after the damage is done.
Full Device Management With Intune
Business Premium includes complete Microsoft Intune capability across Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, not a cut-down version. In practical terms, that means new starter laptops can be set up automatically with Windows Autopilot, disk encryption through BitLocker can be enforced rather than left to chance, and personal phones can access company email without company data being able to leak out of that phone if it is lost, stolen, or simply used by someone else in the household.
Entra ID P1 And Conditional Access
This is the piece that quietly stops most account takeovers. Conditional access lets you block sign-ins from unfamiliar countries or unrecognised devices, force multi-factor authentication automatically when something looks risky, and restrict access to company data to devices that are actually managed and compliant. Business Standard has none of this. A stolen password on Standard is often enough on its own.
Data Loss Prevention
Premium includes tools to stop sensitive information such as card numbers, National Insurance numbers or customer records leaving the business by accident, whether that is an email sent to the wrong address or a well-meaning member of staff trying to work around a policy they do not fully understand.
Why This Matters More Than It Used To
The UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026 found that 43% of UK businesses reported a cyber breach or attack in the past 12 months, with phishing remaining by far the most common route in and rated the most disruptive type of attack by those affected. None of the tools built into Business Standard are designed to catch or contain that kind of attack. Every tool listed above is.
The Price Gap Has Nearly Disappeared
From July 2026, Microsoft is increasing the price of Business Standard by around 12%, while Business Premium’s price is not moving at all. The traditional argument for staying on Standard, that Premium costs meaningfully more, is getting weaker every time Microsoft revises its pricing. Bought separately, the security tools Premium already includes would cost more on their own than the gap between the two plans.

Our Take
We think every business, regardless of size, should be on Business Premium. Not because the productivity apps are any different, they are not, but because in a threat landscape where nearly half of UK businesses are being targeted every year, the security layer that used to be optional is now closer to table stakes. Business Standard was a reasonable choice when Premium cost noticeably more for features many businesses assumed they did not need. That gap, in price and in assumption, has narrowed a long way.
